Where does FMC take place? What are the classrooms and dorms like? Friends Music Camp meets each summer on the campus of the Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio. The Olney Friends School campus includes five main buildings – the main building, activity center, guest house, boys' dorm and girls' dorm. Most lessons, classes, and ensembles take place in the main building, which includes the school auditorium, cafeteria, gym, library, and many offices and classrooms. Performances take place in the auditorium. The main building also houses the library, where campers may borrow books, read magazines, and access the internet. Olney's grounds are expansive, including two playing fields, wooded trails, and a pond. Campers often play soccer or ultimate frisbee, take walks, or swim during their free time. Campers and staff live in the dormitory buildings. Male campers live with male staff in the boys' dorm; female campers live with female staff in the girls' dorm. Campers have up to three roommates, depending on room size. Campers live with others of similar ages, or may request specific roommates before camp. One male and one female counselor act as mentors to our two week campers, living with them, helping them keep track of their schedules and enjoy their time at FMC. Matresses, closet space, and dressers are provided; campers must bring their own linens and towels. There are bathrooms and showers on each hall. Our nurse and some staff live adjacent to the main building in the Mary Davis guest house, which also has more teaching studios and practice spaces. Our camp nurse takes care of basic health care needs during camp, and Barnesville hospital is less than three miles from camp, if needed. In Barnesville, there are several grocery stores and other shops, as well as a public library. While campers rarely feel the need to leave campus, they are permitted to walk in groups to the nearest grocery store.
