Friends Music Camp

What is there to do for fun at FMC? (Besides music, of course!) "My favorite thing about FMC is that I can play my instrument but still be seen as a whole person with a unique identity." FMC's focus is certainly on music, but it is also a camp, and creating a strong (and fun!) camper and staff community is important to us. From living in dorms to participating in recreational activities and other all-camp events, we grow each year into a strong community group -- something that is treasured by everyone in the FMC community.
Campers have dedicated free time each day. Many choose to sit and talk with friends, read quietly, make crafts, or play guitar and sing (which often attracts quite a large group), and others are more active, going for walks around campus, swimming in the pond, or playing ultimate frisbee, badminton, basketball, or soccer. A staff of three male counselors and three female counselors supervise the dorms and organize free time activities. The lounges in each dorm are popular hangout areas on rainy (or very hot) days. Evening programs happen after dinner each night. Many evening programs are recitals. Those that are not are often games like soccer or capture the flag, or are special speakers, often on peace and justice issues. We also have a few special nights like "stunt night" (a kind of funny talent show), a camper-planned dance, and the annual feast.
At the end of the second week, we have a celebratory feast and campfire to honor our two-weekers on their last day of camp. The feast is planned and cooked by a committee of campers and staff, and it often has a theme. This is a wonderful time to reflect on camp experiences and enjoy wonderful food and fellowship. Every year, we also take several fun off-campus trips, including a trip to the Barnesville pool, evenings at a local state park and a water park in nearby Wheeling, and the yearly canoe trip on the Tuscaroras River.
In addition to recreational activities, all campers participate in the community life in two major housekeeing areas: dish crew and big cleanup. These times of service to FMC and to Olney can also be fun bonding times for campers and staff, and they are important aspects of our community life.
